The ancient casbah Situated atop a hill – 236 m – … – the site of the ancient casbah magnificent views over the bay of Agadir.In 1540, to protect themselves from attacks by the Portuguese, that Mohammed esh Sheikh built this site a powerful fortress.Two centuries later, Moulay Abdallah fearing another invasion Portuguese installed a garrison of 2,000 men.Unfortunately, the city was completely destroyed by the earthquake of 1960. Of this ancient citadel,only the walls remain partially rebuilt, and the front door where you can read an inscription in Dutch – “Fear God and respect the king” – recalling that the Netherlands had in the seventeenth century a counter to Agadir.
